Community Goals

Grayslist is building a supportive, equitable, and self-sustaining community rooted in mutual aid, solidarity, and collective care. These goals are not rules but shared intentions, a living agreement among residents of Grays Landing and our South Waterfront neighbors. Together we work toward a community where everyone’s needs are met, where cooperation replaces isolation, and where abundance grows from connection.

We are creating universal internet access for all residents through building-wide Wi-Fi, recognizing connection as a basic right. Free personal computers will help close the digital divide, ensuring every household can study, work, and communicate without barriers. With these foundations, Side-Hustle University will support residents who want to learn digital and creative skills, develop small businesses, or gain financial independence.

We envision a system of shared prosperity that includes a Community Dividend Program returning surplus income from collective ventures to residents. The Grayslist Workers Union will represent residents and volunteers in advocating for fair labor, shared decision-making, and recognition of every contribution. Free phone plans, laundry access, and public transit will reduce costs and expand mobility for all.

Environmental health is part of our well-being. Grayslist is working toward cleaner air through unit-level filtration to reduce the effects of I-5 pollution, along with renewable power from rooftop solar panels and wind generators. Shared electric cars, composting programs, and a community tool library will reduce waste and promote sustainability.

Food brings people together. The weekly Grayslist Food Bank delivery brings thirty boxes of high-quality food from the Oregon Food Bank into the community room every Friday morning. A food co-op with local farms will add fresh produce and shared learning through workshops on canning, pickling, and preservation. Daily free breakfasts and monthly dinners at The Old Spaghetti Factory will strengthen bonds among neighbors while ensuring no one goes hungry.

Grayslist also nurtures mental and physical health. Future programs include community-led therapy support, a wellness and fitness calendar, a childcare co-op, and cooperative renters and health insurance to lower costs and expand care. An Accessible Transportation Fund will help residents reach jobs, appointments, and resources.

As our network grows, we will extend mutual aid beyond the building. South Waterfront neighbors, REACH staff, and unhoused residents will be invited to participate, ensuring the benefits of Grayslist reach everyone connected to this community.

These goals are still forming and will evolve through discussion, effort, and imagination. Each idea is a seed planted together. Grayslist thrives on participation, creativity, and shared labor, proving that a community built on cooperation can meet its own needs and model a fairer world.

We invite you to help develop these projects and share your own ideas. Together, we can shape a community where care is practiced daily, and where everyone at Grays Landing contributes to and benefits from the shared work of living well.
